WIDE Sizing

We've recently introduced options in “wide” sizing, to cater to our runners with broader feet. Here's what you need to know about our wide sizing:

Myth About “Wides”

A shoe with FootShape (or a “roomy toe box”) is different than a wide shoe. When most brands offer a shoe in a “wide,” they simply widen the sole, but the design still has a tapered toe box, pushing the big toe inward.  With Altra’s FootShape, there is space in the toe box or the toes to splay naturally. Altra also offers several shoes in “wide,” for a widened sole coupled with a roomy toe box.

Why Go Wide(r)?

Altra Running is known for its unique FootShape™ toe boxes that cater to the natural shape of your foot. This design ensures comfort, promotes stability, and supports the health of your feet by providing ample room for your toes to spread naturally. Now, Altra has taken this concept a step further with the introduction of the Torin 7 Wide and Lone Peak 8 Wide. Our Torin and Lone Peak Wide have an extra 3-5mm extra width across the whole sole, not just the toe box. They also have extra width and volume across the upper. They measure between 12 and 13 cm at their widest point.

These new wide(r)-fit shoes are designed for runners who need even more room—whether you have naturally wider feet, suffer from bunions, or just need extra space to feel comfortable.

But why should some runners consider going wider? Let's explore the benefits.

The Benefits of a FootShape Toe Box:

Enhanced Comfort

When it comes to running shoes, comfort is key. A Foot-Shape toe box allows your toes to splay naturally, which is crucial, especially during longer runs when your feet tend to swell. Shoes that are too tight in the forefoot can lead to discomfort, blisters, or even long-term issues like bunions. By opting for a wider fit, your feet have more room to expand, reducing friction and keeping you comfortable mile after mile.

Improved Stability and Balance

A wider shoe helps to create a stable platform for your foot to land on. Your toes can naturally spread out, which leads to better ground contact and improved balance. This is particularly beneficial for trail runners who encounter uneven surfaces—more stability means less risk of slipping or twisting an ankle. With Altra's wider fit, you can expect a secure ride without feeling constricted.

Alleviation of Foot Conditions

Foot conditions such as bunions, hammertoes, and plantar fasciitis can make finding comfortable running shoes a challenge. A wider toe box reduces the pressure that traditional, narrower shoes can place on these areas, giving your feet the space they need to heal or stay comfortable. The Torin 7 Wide and Lone Peak 8 Wide are ideal options for those who suffer from bunions, as they prevent rubbing and crowding that can aggravate this condition.

Natural Foot Function and Improved Biomechanics

A wide toe box encourages a more natural foot shape and function. Your toes can spread, helping with shock absorption and promoting proper alignment. This means less risk of injury, as your feet are functioning as they were meant to. Altra's wider fit maintains zero-drop cushioning, allowing a natural stride while providing the extra space many runners need for optimal biomechanics.

Perfect for Runners in South Africa

In South Africa, wider feet are quite common due to lifestyle and genetic factors. Many people have naturally broader feet that can feel cramped in conventional shoe sizes. Altra's new wider options—the Torin 7 Wide and Lone Peak 8 Wide—offer a comfortable solution for runners who need that extra width. Whether you're running on roads, tackling rocky trails, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, a wide-fit shoe can enhance your experience by allowing your feet to feel unrestricted and comfortable.

Who Should Go Wider?

If you've ever experienced discomfort in the front of your shoes or felt like your toes were too cramped, it may be time to go wider. Runners with naturally wide feet, those prone to swelling during long distances, or anyone dealing with foot issues like bunions can benefit from the extra space offered by Altra's new wide-fit shoes. Even runners who don't necessarily need extra width might find that the added comfort improves their overall experience, particularly on long runs or during training sessions where foot fatigue sets in.

The Altra Approach to Width

Altra’s philosophy has always centered around allowing the foot to function naturally. The new wide-fit versions of the Torin 7 and Lone Peak 8 continue this tradition by providing additional room without compromising the key features that runners love—zero-drop cushioning, balanced comfort, and supportive midsoles. By making space for your toes to spread out, Altra helps you run your best, whether you're setting a new personal record on the trail or just enjoying the freedom of a comfortable, natural stride.

The Final Rundown

Choosing the right fit can make all the difference in your running journey. If you've struggled with cramped toes, instability, or foot pain, it's time to consider going wider. The Altra Torin 7 Wide and Lone Peak 8 Wide offer all the benefits of Altra's FootShape™ toe box, now with even more room for those who need it. Embrace the comfort, stability, and natural movement your feet deserve—because every runner should feel free to move.
